Panama K – Near Completion

May 5, 2008

This painting of Panama K – aka Blossom, has been a learning experience. I don’t think I brought this up in my posts before,  I am relatively new to the media of oils.  I have tried, but soon gave up and went back to my pencils. They are a complex and challenging media. Each pigment has its own unique attributes. Then, mix in the miriad of mediums and materials available to today’s artist!! It is challenging to delve into taking on a new media with confidence and alone in your studio, without the guidance of a master in the media.

This my friends, is the very first layered oil painting I have ever attempted or can call complete. It’s taken a while and there are still many parts of it I believe could be improved upon. Noting each one of my steps to create this work, I have learned a great deal from this painting. Personally it marks a very important transition in my career as an artist.  I have left the safety of my pencils into a new realm of oil paint! I am not sure I can go back!

Revel Sel de Mer

Lily - Summer \'05

Revel Sel de Mer – Summer ‘05

One of the most exciting parts of my series is watching my subjects mature. It is amazing to see all the proportional changes foals go through. As most horse people reading this know, there can be some gangly and awkward stages in their development. Times when the hind end is high, big looking head, huge ears..then a few months down the line things start to even up.

In a couple months as the weather starts to warm up here in Ontario, I will be revisiting all the subjects in the series. I will post the new shots and we can all see how they are growing and developing. Lets hope they will all be at stage of good proportion. :)

There is one subject I will share with you now and be sure to click on the links of the horses throughout the post so you can learn more about each of them.  Revel Sel de Mer, otherwise known as ‘Lily’, is registered Selle Francais, out of Kalonja (Ana) by Jamestown. Ana is the same mare which produced Panama K, also in the series. Lily is now owned by Claire Hunter of Braecrest Stables in Loretto, Ontario. I photographed her as a foal is the summer of ‘05 and created some water-soluble graphite sketches of her. She had a pretty face, kind eye, solidly built, and slightly large ears…teehee..

and here is a shot of the dam, known as ‘Ana’:

Here is Lily in the summer of ‘07:

Hasn’t she matured? She’s a really classy looking girl, certainly looks like a nice hunter prospect. She didn’t grow out of her big ears though..but with her puppy-dog personality, it is certainly one of her endearing traits.

One other interesting component to this story is comparing Ana’s ‘05 foal with her ‘07 foal, Panama K. She was sired by VDL Ulando H. As a broodmare, Ana seems to allow many physical aspects of the stallion to come shining through. Lily is nice and round, with good bone, while Panama has delicate ‘china doll-like’ features. Two very different looking offspring.

Coincedentaly, Claire and Braecrest Stables now have the Ana for the ‘09 breeding season! I can’t wait to see who she breeds her to!!

One small note, please disregard any spelling errors, the spellchecker on WordPress isn’t working.. .. and I am a crappy speller!
