Finding a composition with Fellini
February 23, 2008
Last summer I travelled to Chris VonGartzens farm in Erin, Ontario to visit with her then 17 month old, Hanoverian ‘Fellini’. I was very excited to see him and include him in the series, he is a very well bred little guy. “Fellini” is out of “Malawi” by the Hanoverian stallion “Fabuleux” This is an exceptional stallion by the famous German State stud “Fabriano”. “Fabuleux” is owned by Dr. Barbara Schmidt and stands at stud in Kentucky. Fellini exhibits a great, sound temperament, is easy to handle and has 3 very good gaits. His canter especially looks phenomenal.
Chris has had great success in dressage with his dam, Malawi, winning the five year old Canadian Performance Futurity class in 2007. Chris also bred Malawi, by Maurice, a Hanoverian stallion whom she imported from Germany a number of years ago.
I was able to capture numerous reference images of Fellini. I have begun the sketching process to create compositions, from there, I will decide which layouts I will proceed to finalize in colour. The above sketch I did yesterday. I like the angle and the simple gestures that emphasize his movement. I think the head expression needs just a little bit more work to finalize.
